Imperial Nude, or Sleeping Mars
July 18, 2017

I continue the series of paintings ‘The Life of Mars & Venus’. The plot is taken from the classic paintings, where Venus is sleeping on the red sofa — symbol of passion and sexuality. Depicting nude women was the privilege of male-painters. The time has changed, and in my work I also portrait a nude — my beloved Max — who is is idolized to God Mars. Same you can see on a Sylvia Sleigh art-piece 'Imperial Nude'.
I deconstruct traditional images of masculinity and search for alternatives, showing the engagement with weakness and vulnerability, illustrating the gaze of desire and the erotic pose. My art tells how the man has been re-inventing himself since the traditional classic oil paintings times — and how he faces his nakedness, how self-confident me as a woman artist conquer the motif that was long forbidden to all women.
The series of my Marses was started in March 2015, a month, which was named after this God.
